Impact of Google’s Mobile Algorithm Analyzed and Explained

Google and Responsive Web DesignGoogle recently made an update to their search ranking algorithm that made big news. They told all us business owners “if your website doesn’t have specially designed phone and tablet versions, you’re going to be dropped from mobile web searches and will lose more than half of the business we send you.” That “more than half” is the percentage of Google searches made on mobile devices, which is continually climbing.

While this announcement poses a big threat to businesses who don’t have a mobile responsive website, it also presents a large opportunity to those who do something about it. Every change in search position is worth a lot of extra visitors, and those businesses who have a mobile website are first in line to climb the rankings above those who don’t.

We’ve been telling our clients for years that responsive design (a phone and tablet website) helps them win more business, citing research done by Google back in 2012 (when a mobile browsing experience wasn’t as expected as it is today, which makes this even more impressive). If you are not aware of this research, here is what Google says responsive design does for your business.

  • 74% of mobile users said they’re more likely to return to mobile-friendly sites in the future.
  • 75% of users prefer a mobile-friendly site.

No wonder Google changed their algorithm. People on mobile devices have been telling us for 3 years that it’s what they want, and 67% of them (nearly 7 out of 10) are more likely to give us their business if we listen. I don’t know about you, but increasing my website’s mobile conversion rate from 33 to 67% makes having a responsive website very worthwhile.
